Why does it take a few days to receive the results?
No medical caregiver wants to leave their patients waiting for long. Your results take some time because rendering a diagnosis is a coordinated effort that takes place over the course of four stages in three different locations.
The Process:
At The Clinic
Your clinician performs a biopsy to collect tissue samples from the prostate.
The process:
- 12-14 tissue samples are taken form different areas of the prostate
- Samples are collected either through the rectum or perineum
- Clinician uses TRUS (transrectal ultrasound device)
- In some cases an MRI will be required as well
After the tissue is removed it is sent to a laboratory.
In the Lab
After your biopsy, your tissue is sent to a laboratory for tissue processing. At this stage, the lab technicians chemically preserve your tissue and prepare it to be analyzed by a pathologist.
Pathologist
Traditionally, a pathologist would examine your tissue under a microscope. Today, many pathologists have access to digital tools that help them analyze your tissue. These tools allow them to easily consult with other pathologists and get second opinions to ensure an accurate diagnosis of your tissue.
Clinician
Once your tissue has been diagnosed by a pathologist, the results will be sent back to your clinician. This includes a detailed report designed to help your clinician determine next steps and treatment options if necessary.
